Non-Licensed Asbestos Work FAQs

Non-licensed asbestos work refers to lower-risk tasks involving asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) that are not highly friable (easily crumbled) and do not release significant asbestos fibres. This includes minor maintenance, repairs, and removal of certain asbestos materials where the risk of fibre release is minimal. Workers handling non-licensed asbestos must have appropriate training to ensure safe working practices and compliance with UK Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012.
No, you must have appropriate training before working with or removing non-licensed asbestos. While a specialist asbestos removal licence is not required, workers must still undergo Category B (Non-Licensed Asbestos) training to ensure safe handling. Additionally, some tasks involving asbestos may still need to be notified to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).

Category B (CAT B) asbestos training is Non-Licensed Asbestos Work training, designed for workers who carry out tasks that disturb asbestos-containing materials. This includes activities such as:

  • Drilling into ACMs
  • Removing asbestos-containing floor tiles, cement sheets, or textured coatings
  • Cleaning or repairing asbestos-containing materials
  • Handling asbestos debris or waste

This training equips workers with practical skills to safely handle non-licensed asbestos and comply with UK asbestos regulations.

CAT B asbestos training typically lasts a full day (8 hours), including both theory-based learning and practical hands-on training. The training certificate will be valid for one year.
